Indianapolis, IN (Friday, March 15, 2013) - KV Racing Technology driver Simona De Silvestro was the Chevrolet brand ambassador for the European premiere of the new Spark EV at the Geneva Auto Show. De Silvestro drove the car onto the stage and spoke with media and the general public about the car throughout the week. The Spark Electric Vehicle is Chevrolet's all-new mini car, which had its global debut in Los Angeles in 2012.
"It was great having Simona at the Geneva Auto Show to assist with the European premiere of the new Chevrolet Spark EV," says Beate Stumpe, Brand and Marketing Director, Chevrolet Europe. "Her passion for energy conservation coupled with the tremendous fan base she enjoys not only in Switzerland, but throughout Europe makes her a great ambassador for the Spark EV and the Chevrolet Volt. We look forward to having Simona join us for future promotions as we continue to build on Chevrolet's commitment to cutting edge technology."
De Silvestro, who drives a Volt when in the U.S., will be driving a Chevy-powered Indy car this season. This is her first season as part of the Chevy family and she's excited about the opportunities that this new relationship gives her. "It was a really good experience being with Chevrolet at the auto show here in my hometown," she said. "I really enjoyed working with them this week and had a lot of fun introducing the Spark EV to Europe. It's great having Chevy as a partner. I look forward to working with them both on and off the track this season."
KV Racing Technology team owner, Imran Safiulla, was on hand all week at the motor show. He thinks the partnership with Chevy is a natural fit for the team and its energy based sponsors. "Sustainable mobility is in the best interest of everyone; our future depends on companies like Chevrolet coming up with innovative alternatives to the use of fossil fuels," he said. "Racing is in essence a high-tech lab used to develop new technologies that can further advances at the consumer level and Chevrolet has proven themselves to be a top competitor both on and off the track. Their successes on the race-track and in their innovative line of low-emission vehicles made them an obvious choice for us. We're extremely proud to have Chevrolet as our partner in the IZOD IndyCar Series."
The Chevrolet Spark EV is anticipated to set a benchmark in performance for an urban city electric car and will be sold in select European markets as of 2014. Powered by the most advanced electric motor and battery system GM has ever built, Spark EV will produce a sports-car-like 542 Nm of instantaneous torque and 130 hp (100 kW). With 0-100 km/h acceleration of under 8.5 seconds, and seamless power that is available at every stage of the drive, Chevrolet's electric mini car looks set to be fun to drive. Moreover, the Spark EV will deliver a very competitive range which is expected to place the mini car among the best in the EV segment. Check out the unveiling in Geneva here.
KV Racing Technology also plans to incorporate the Chevy Volt and Chevy Spark into their STEM education outreach program. The team and their sponsors are working diligently to raise the visibility of STEM education while at the same time promoting the use of sustainable mobility options such as those offered by Chevrolet's Electric Vehicles. Their outreach program will make its first stop at an event on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville on March 19th.
De Silvestro will make her season debut with her Chevy-powered car when the 2013 IZOD IndyCar season kicks off on March 24 in St. Petersburg, FL. The race will air on NBC Sports Network with coverage starting at noon.
