Sao Paulo, Brazil (Friday, May 3, 2013) - It seems only fitting that Brazil be the site of Tony Kanaan's 200th consecutive start. The 36-year-old Brazilian will celebrate his monumental milestone in front of his son Leo, family members and countryman when he takes the green flag at this Sunday's Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle.
"Racing in Brazil is always a huge deal for me because of the crowd," Kanaan said. "My fans, family, friends, and sponsors always give me a huge boost every time I come into town, but this race means a little bit more to me than the previous three times that IndyCar raced in São Paulo. It will be my 200th consecutive start in IndyCar, 260th if counted all together. People tell me it's a big number... The consecutive starts go all the way back to Portland 2001, I think. I rarely pay attention to numbers or records, but I'm pretty happy with this one and the weekend can't come soon enough so I can start driving my KV Itaipava/Chevy/Firestone through the streets of São Paulo.
Kanaan aims to surpass his team co-owner, Jimmy Vasser, who currently holds the record with 211 consecutive starts. If all goes well, Kanaan should tie Vasser's record in Sonoma and break the record on September 1, 2013 on the streets of Baltimore.
"All records are meant to be broken," Vasser said, "and I can't think of anyone I'd rather see my record fall to than TK. Tony's an 'Ironman' both on and off the track. His consistency and commitment to his sport are qualities that I think were necessary for him to get to this point. He's a great driver and we're really proud to have him driving for KV Racing."
Team manager Steve Moore is looking forward to being part of the moment. "It's a great milestone for TK to be making his 200th start in his home race of Brazil," Moore said. "It's a very exciting moment and it's great for KV Racing to be a part of this achievement. We're looking forward to seeing him take the green flag on Sunday."
Kanaan also raced on the oval in Rio three times while competing in CART. His best starting position was third and his best finish was fifth in 1999. His best finish in his three starts in Sal Paulo was 12th in 2010. The native of Salvador de Bahia, Brazil is confident that he can better those results this weekend.
Tune in to the Itaipava Sao Paulo Indy 300 presented by Nestle live on NBC SN Sunday at 11:00 a.m. ET and watch as TK takes one more step in his historic journey toward a record that will fortify his legacy as the Ironman of IndyCar.
