TORONTO, ON - Saturday, July 12, 2013 - KV Racing Technology driver Tony Kanaan qualified a season-high tying fourth for tomorrow's Honda Indy Toronto Race No. 1 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Teammate Simona De Silvestro qualified 22nd.
Tony Kanaan, who pilots the No. 11 Hydroxycut - KV Racing Technology - SH Racing machine, qualified with a lap of 60.1179 seconds (105.093 mph)on the 1.75-mile, 11-turn temporary street circuit. The 38-year-old Brazilian, who is making his eighth start in Toronto, went out in group two in round one of qualifying and posted the fourth fastest lap of the 12 drivers in his group with a time of 60.3178 seconds and thus advanced to the second round. In Round No. 2 he recorded the third quickest lap of the 12 drivers, 59.9730 seconds, which put him into the final round of qualifying, the Firestone Fast Six where he placed fourth of the six drivers. This is the fourth time Kanaan has made it to the second round of street/road course qualifying in six attempts this year and the second time he has advanced to the Firestone Fast Six. Today's fourth-place qualifying performance also matches his best qualifying result on the streets of Toronto.
"It was a good day," Kanaan said. "As soon as we rolled off the truck the car was very consistent and fast. It was a quite difficult qualifying. The track in turn one is extremely slippery. You never know what is going to happen when you go through there. The slower I went into that corner the better I came off which is completely against my rules. It was a good qualifying effort and I think it is going to be a tough race tomorrow. This is a home race for my sponsor Hydroxycut, so hopefully we can have a good result for them and the fans."
Simona De Silvestro, driver of the Nuclear Clean Air Energy Chevy, is making her fourth appearance at Toronto, and is hoping to get back to her early season performance. Coming off a season-high oval qualifying, she was hoping to match her season-high street course qualifying, third in the season opener at St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, that wasn't to be. While the 24-year-old Swiss driver was frustrated with her performance today, she is hoping tomorrow will be a better day. Having her last standing start only 5 years ago, De Silvestro is hoping to have an edge on some of the other drivers who've not participated in that starting format as recently.
"It was a really frustrating session," she said . "We've not been fast since we pretty much rolled out. Hopefully for tomorrow, we can fix it and have a good race from where we're starting and have a better qualifying for the second race. But, we'll have to see... Right now I don't think any of us are happy at all with what we've got, so we just need to work a little bit harder and keep getting better every session."
Kanaan has now qualified in the top-10 six times in 12 events this season with season-high starting positions of fourth here in Toronto and in Brazil. The 38-year-old Brazilian is sixth in the championship standings with 271 points on the strength of five top-10 finishes including three podium performances and a victory in the 2013 Indianapolis 500.
De Silvestro has qualified in the top-10 three times this season: third at St. Petersburg, eighth at Sao Paulo, and ninth at Pocono. De Silvestro has finished in the top-10 three times this year including a season-high sixth also at St. Pete. She also has an eighth-place showing at Sao Paulo and a ninth at Long Beach.
There was a 90-minute practice session prior to qualifying. During the session Kanaan posted the seventh fastest lap with a time of 60.9041 seconds (103.737 mph). De Silvestro was 21st on the speed charts with a lap of61.8553 seconds (102.142 mph).
Tomorrow's Honda Indy Toronto Race No. 1, which will feature the first standing start in IndyCar history, will be preceded by qualifying for Sunday's Race No. 2 at 10:35 a.m. The Honda Indy Race No. 1 will be broadcast live on NBC starting at 3:00 p.m. ET.
Qualifying for race No. 2 on the two race weekends features two groups, but just one round of qualifying with the groups determined by Friday's practice times. The grid for Race No. 2 is set by the group with the fastest car taking the pole and the odd numbered positions. The cars from the other group slot into the even numbered positions with the fastest car in the slower group taking the second position on the front row.
