FONTANA, CA - Friday, October 18, 2013 - KV Racing Technology's Tony Kanaan and Simona De Silvestro qualified 12th and 21st for tomorrow's MAVTV 500 on the two-mile D-shaped Auto Club Speedway oval.
Kanaan, who pilots the No. 11 Hydroxycut - KV Racing Technology - SH Racing machine, went out 11th of the 22 drivers that made a qualifying run. He posted a two-lap average of 217.566 mph with the second lap being .2321, a second slower than the first.
"We went a little aggressive with the setup so I knew the second lap would be slower," Kanaan said. "It's a 500-mile race and we have a good race car. Hey, we started 12th at Indy."
De Silvestro, behind the wheel of the No. 78 Nuclear Clean Air Energy - KV Racing Technology car, was the ninth driver to make a qualifying attempt and recorded an average speed of 214.679 mph.
"I was actually looking forward to coming here, which hasn't really happened for a long time," De Silvestro said. "Usually with the ovals, I was always not quite sure about them. But now I think I'm pretty confident on them for sure, so I'm a bit disappointed that our qualifying run wasn't great. It seems like when the track got hotter we started picking up a lot of under-steer. We had the same thing happening in the morning session. Maybe that's actually a good thing for the night race, because usually the car gets a little bit looser at night. I think our race car feels pretty good and the race is what's important. Wherever we start I think we can be consistent, especially on old tires, and I think that will be the key to the race."
Kanaan has now qualified in the top-10 four times in 10 attempts at Fontana with a pole in 2002. He has qualified in the top-10 seven times in 18 events this season with a best starting spot of fourth at Toronto (Race 1) and Brazil. The 38-year-old Brazilian has finished in the top-10 six times in his previous nine starts in Fontana with a best showing of second in 2004 and 2006.He is currently 11th in the championship standings with 361 points on the strength of six top-10 finishes including five top-five showings, three podiums and an extremely popular victory at the 2013 Indianapolis 500.
De Silvestro is making her second appearance in Fontana. Last year hampered by a Lotus engine she started 26th and finished 26th. The 25-year-old Swiss driver has qualified in the top-10 six times this season, five times on road/street circuits plus an oval career-high ninth atPocono. Herbest qualifying this season was her IndyCar career-high third at St. Petersburg.De Silvestro has placed in the top-10 nine times this year including two top-five finishes and her first career podium, a second at Houston (Race 1). In her last nine events she has put together a remarkable streak of results that has seen her jump fiveplaces in the standings. She is currently tied for 14th with 338 points.
The MATV 500 will be broadcast live tomorrow on NBC starting at 8:00 p.m. ET.
