SEBASTIAN SAAVEDRA QUALIFIES 14TH FOR HONDA INDY 200
LEXINGTON, OH - August 2, 2014 - KV AFS Racing's Sebastian Saavedra will have his best start for the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio tomorrow after qualifying 14th today at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
Driving the No. 17 Automatic Fire Sprinklers, Inc. - KV AFS Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone machine, Saavedra went out in the second group for round one of qualifying. Under wet conditions, he consistently ran sixth, but on the final lap got bumped to seventh and just missed out on advancing to the second round. Saavedra recorded a fast lap of 99.0743 seconds (82.048 mph) on the 2.258-mile, 13-turn road circuit.
"I am excited for the team for securing their third pole of the season", said Saavedra. "I'm a bit disappointed as we should have had both cars in the Firestone Fast Six as we had a strong car. Unfortunately, we had limited laps because of the red. The KV AFS Racing team showed in the final practice session this morning the strength we have, so with the better weather tomorrow we should be able to prove that again in the race. Congratulations to Bourdais on his pole and I look forward to the race tomorrow."
The 24-year-old Colombian will be making his third IndyCar start here this weekend. In his previous two races, he has a best finish of 20th last year and now has best start of14th. Saavedra has also raced twice at Mid-Ohio in Indy Lights, where he secured a top-five finish in 2010.
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Saavedra has been among the youngest drivers in nearly every series he has competed in. He joined the Firestone Indy Lights just before his 19th birthday and that year was awarded Rookie of the Year Honors with AFS Racing/Andretti Autosport. He moved to Bryan Herta Autosport for 2010 where he made his Indianapolis 500 debut becoming the third Colombian driver to do so. Saavedra then stepped up to the IndyCar Series in 2011 with Conquest Racing before returning to Indy Lights in 2012. Last year he spent the entire season back in IndyCar with Dragon Racing.
The race will be broadcast live on NBCSports from 3 p.m. ET. and IMS IndyCar Radio can be heard on Sirius 213 and XM 209, check local listings for your local station, or listen at IndyCar.com or on Verizon's INDYCAR 14 app.
